Although I have not read any other 'picaresque' novels, this tale of friendship, cons and learning (bad) French captivated and amused me from beginning to end. I laughed out loud a number of times, and cringed a few times as well (sometimes at the same time). Jonny's writing is engaging, clever and funny and flows well from one chapter to the next. Where else can you find gems like: "[...] their breakfastless stomachs rumbled like sneakers in a dryer", or my favorite: "He liked her laugh, it was like the sound of armadillo meat sizzling on an engine." I wasn't even offended when one of the guys referred to my country (I'm from the Netherlands) as 'the nether regions'...I can recommend this book to anyone, you will not be disappointed!

a very fun read. The characters put the "fun" in dysfunctional and you can't wait to see what they screw up next.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this little gem of a novel. Lucas has a snappy writing style and a Tarantino-esque knack for dialog. The mis-adventures of Bruce and Andy reads like "Withnail and I" meets "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" with a dash of a classic Bing Crosby/Bob Hope "Road to …" all wrapped up with a demented sense of humor that provides the reader with many laugh out loud moments. After reading it I was left wanting more. I hope there are more stories to come from Mr. Effing Lucas!
